The M-Lab Director is responsible for leading the Measurement Lab project at Code for Science & Society. This involves building and implementing M-Lab’s long-term vision as a multi-organization consortium and overseeing its growth and governance in collaboration with its partner organizations. The Director reports to the Code for Science & Society Advisory Committee.

Measurement Lab (M-Lab) is the largest open internet measurement platform in the world, hosting internet-scale measurement experiments and releasing all data into the public domain (CC0). M-Lab advances network research and empowers the public with useful information about broadband and mobile connections, enhancing internet transparency, and helping to promote and sustain a healthy, innovative internet.

We are looking for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit to help grow the M-Lab project into an openly governed, multi-organization consortium. The Director will help with everything from strategic growth, partnership management, hiring processes, fundraising, and overall program design and management.

High Level Leadership Responsibilities

  • Lead and facilitate the development of M-Lab’s strategy and theory of change
  • Lead the expansion of the M-Lab project into a multi-organization consortium
  • Build and grow community engagement into open governance structures that engage a diverse set of stakeholders
  • Lead M-Lab’s presence and contributions in relevant ecosystems such as Internet measurement and networking, Internet governance, Internet infrastructure and access, open source technology, Internet Freedom and Digital Equity, etc.
  • Facilitate engagement with researchers, policymakers, regulators, industry, tool builders, and civil society advocates
  • Keep up to date with Internet measurement best practices and methodologies
  • Manage relationships with partnership organizations and community partners
  • Build internal systems for user feedback and communication
  • Lead fundraising efforts with support from the M-Lab team and Advisory Committee

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Maintain detailed overview of all project work streams and manage a coherent integration into overall mission and strategy
  • Manage data analysis, visualization and devops personnel and projects
  • Oversee search and hiring processes
  • Manage, encourage, and facilitate cross-org collaboration
  • Facilitate annual planning and strategy in collaboration with contributing partners and M-Lab Advisory Committee

  • Comfortable with exploring and evaluating new tools

Nice to Have Experience

  • Experience managing and soliciting corporate, philanthropic and community partnerships and guiding organizations through growth
  • Knowledgeable about one or more of the following areas: open source technology projects, Internet governance, Internet measurement, networking, broadband planning, digital equity, data analysis, data visualization, and/or academic research
  • Have experience managing and enjoy working with a fully remote, distributed team, across many time zones and cultures
  • Comfortable in cross-cultural, multidisciplinary communication, e.g. experience with international work

Details of the position

  • Measurement Lab is a fiscally sponsored project of Code for Science & Society, which offers employee benefits through TriNet including health insurance and retirement.
  • The team is distributed across the US and Europe, so while this position can be based anywhere, the candidate should be able to easily collaborate with Central European, US Eastern and Pacific time zones.
  • Travel to conferences, events, and team meetings is anticipated to be 20%.
  • Salary Range: $100-110k
